Photo Credit: SplashWe're going to commit pop-culture blasphemy: We're sick of The Daily Show, and in particular, of Jon Stewart. There, we said it. The constant self-referential off-script asides about their behind-the-scenes bit-writing process; the jokes that have taken a turn for the juvenile; the constant, insincere self-deprecation and fake humility. Plus, all things sex-related are apparently beneath him and his hoity-toity show, and that's hard not to take personally (sniffle). No, for sheer on-air talent (not to mention sex appeal), we'll take Stephen Colbert any day. But when it comes to biting political and pop-cultural satirical commentary in the form of fake news, the winner has got to be The Onion's online video department.
They don't pull any punches and aren't afraid to tackle the dark and
disturbing sides of life (including those that intersect with sex) with
sick and twisted humor. The titles alone are "no-they-di'int" funny
while concisely exposing the hypocrisy and sheer lunacy of so many of
our societal "norms": "'Gays Too Precious to Risk in Combat,' Says
General" and "Live From Congress: The Skull Fucking Bill of 2007." And
unlike many of the articles in the print version of The Onion,
the content that follows a video title often continues to be engaging
and amusing. Our recent fave is the "report" titled, "Missing Girl
Probably Raped." The bit is spot-on in its indictment of mainstream
media's (and thus the audience's) obsession with the intersection of
sex and violence against women--especially hot, young, blonde, white
women.
