![]() A grasping-at-straws parent writes into the U.K. Guardian in search of some studies that would convince their 14-year-old daughter that it's better to wait to have sex. Right, like an Excel spreadsheet stuffed with facts and figures could be more persuasive than the captain of the soccer team at that age?! Still, bless every parent who tries, rather than assuming that sex-ed is someone else's job. And, hey, it might just work: Over in Holland, where the clog-wearers consider it completely natural to discuss sex at the family dinner table, teens have sex later, use more protection, and experience less regret. As it turns out, there's a buttload of research out there demonstrating that at least half of all women wish they'd waited longer. And 70 percent of girls who got their cherry popped before their 16th birthday regret it. Apparently curiosity, booze, and peer pressure are to blame--shocker. Em, for one, has never regretted waiting until her senior year of college to do it, though she kind of wishes that something besides fear-of-going-to-hell had inspired the waiting; it's not exactly the kind of "wisdom" she wants to pass onto her own future children. Lo, on the other hand, was lucky enough to fall in love in high school and savvy enough to seek out her local Planned Parenthood, so her first time was positively dreamy. So how about you? Do you wish you'd waited, or was it just the right time? (Or are you still waiting?) And how have you or will you advise any current or future kids? |
