Confession: I can guess the age of a patient by simply looking at her lower half when undressed for an exam. If she has pubic hair simply trimmed, she's likely over thirty. (Untrimmed at all, probably over fifty.) But if she's as hairless as a Peruvian, I bet she's in her teens or twenties. On Friday, L. came into my office terrified that she had contracted an STD from her partner. She said that "bumps" had appeared all over her mons during their vacation in Greece. "Do you think it's herpes?" she anxiously asked me. I took a close look, and saw not herpes, but folliculitis from her pre-vacation Brazilian (I know there are different types of waxes--this was the full Monty).
L. isn't the only woman I've seen with itchy red bumps over her nether regions after a generous waxing or shaving. It's not dangerous to remove most or all of your hair, if it's removed under hygienic conditions. But I'm still amazed by how widespread this habit has become among young women. (I blame porn for the rise of the hairless vulva as something considered attractive, rather than prepubescent.) But it leaves me wondering--are their partners also clipping or shaving their short and curlies? Hey, I'm a woman's doc, so I don't see many men below the belt...so can I ask y'all? What do you and your man do about your hair down there? Do you both shave, or not, and is it for looks, or how it feels, or both? 5 CommentsLeave a comment |

After a break-up, do everything you can to avoid rose-colored hindsight. This may include playing that montage of fond memories over and over in the theater of your mind with the Dolby surround-sound system playing Muse or Maroon 5 on repeat. No good can come of this; you'll simply end up feeling more inadequate, lonely, and depressed. Instead, focus on your ex's faults. There must be at least one (besides their ability to live without you), even if it's just a malformed pinkie toe or a tendency to douse every meal in ketchup.

More men should start paying the attention that women pay -- and by that I mean the women in their 30s you refer to. A little trim just makes things easier to get at!
I'm in my late twenties and I prefer what I affectionatly call the "landing strip." A full brazilian just makes me feel like a 12 year old girl. Anyway, I think males should manscape more dilligently without resorting to waxing or shaving. The scrotum has a tendency to look like a plucked chicken.
I've had this discussion with a plethora of my male friends. We came to the conclusion that we basically all keep our scrotums shaven and smooth. Taking a trimming to the shaft makes us look a little longer so this is a popular technique as well. Going bare is bound to land you an unending supply of taunting from the guys. Instead a lot of us opt for some sort of rectangular shape up top and try and tastefully remove as much of the rest as possible.
Actually going hairless down there has had some popularity wax and wane for about 3,000 years. You can see visual proof of that at any article museum! Tell your patients that they can avoid the bumps and rashes by using products made for the pubic area like the shaving gel at http://www.haircaredownthere.com
Thanks so much for the feedback (and for the mons protection tip, Bonnie)!
