Remember back in December when we brought your attention to the 2008 Sex::Tech Conference's "Fresh Focus: Sex-Ed Digital Video Contest"? The goal of the contest was to have young people answer, in video-form, the question "Why is sex so interesting and sex ed so boring?" in order to the spread the good word about comprehensive sexuality education (oh, and to get the chance to win $3,500). Well, the winners were just announced at the conference, held two weeks ago in San Fran, and our friend Ryan had the good fortune to attend. After the jump, his quick conference round-up, as well as our reviews of the three video finalists...
Short recap: Meeting was called Sex::Tech, organized by Internet Sexuality Information Services and National Sexuality Resource Center. Scene: Picture 400 advocates, researchers, and experts from all over the U.S. across the worlds of sex, public health, youth issues, and online and mobile technology, covering everything from pop culture, religion, sex work, LGBTQ identity, marketing research, to tech platforms--all in the name of keeping the cooties away from kids through tech. Names: Imagine Regina Lynn from Wired, Nikol Hasler from The Midwest Teen Sex Show, Cory Silverberg of About.com's sex channel, Audacia Ray of WakingVixen.com, among other bad girls and boys mingling with some of the most respected health and sex researchers, government agency representatives and community leaders from across the country, and scores of parents and youth. Surreal! Why it worked: The young people, especially the filmmakers, wow, they ruled court and center stage, and the experts were seeking their advice more often than not at every session. You've got to check out the films that won, even some of the ones that didn't. They're going to make great material (even overheard interest in running some spots as is). Check with the Sex::Tech conference website for more info and updates. Sex and tech comes through again! Peace and much love from the Bay, Ryan So we checked out the winners (you should too) and they're very fun. Our favorite is actually the third place winner, a video by Jeremy Fisher (pictured above), with its simplistic style and clear message. Props to the big winner, Kylee Darcy, for not only making the video, but supplying the artwork, animation, narration, and original music--very creative, though we would have liked a sampling of teen narrators rather than just her (or maybe she just reminded us too much of the pretty, blonde, overachieving girls we hated in high school). The second-place vid by Robert Valls was impressive in it's scope and depth, but we were just a smidge bummed by the scene suggesting that, with good sex education, even the high school nerd could "get laid all the time"--we're not fans of abstinence-only programs, but shouldn't good sex ed be emphasizing quality over quantity?

hahaha... did you notice the Chipmunks-style list-of-STD song at the end of the winner's? That pushed it over the edge.
