Dr. Kate,

I had unprotected sex a few days ago (oral and penetration). I know it's stupid and I've been alternately kicking and lecturing myself ever since. What I'd like to know is this: how soon can I get tested for STDs? I don't mind going in several times to get the tests, since I know different things show up at different times, it's just I'd like to start getting answers to my worries as soon as possible. Thanks for your help.

Stupid and Worried

Dear SAW, You're not stupid--we all get careless with something in our lives now and again. You just need to take care of yourself going forward. Different infections do show up at different times, so you're looking at a few trips to your gyno over the next six months. There's no single right answer, but I would recommend:
  • testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea (cervical swab or a urine test) and trichomonas (vaginal swab) in two weeks
  • blood testing for syphilis and HIV in 3 months
  • blood testing for HIV again in 6 months
I know that it seems an incredibly long time to wait, but you don't need to get tested before it will tell you anything. And have you thought about Plan B? It's the emergency contraceptive available "behind the counter" (on request from the pharmacist) that can help prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after sex. This way you can avoid at least one unwelcome test result...

Best of luck,
Dr. Kate

omg, you are not alone, honey. how about when they say they'll use a condom but then beg or ask to slip it in bareback anyway? by then the girl is too hot to really remember her game plan. i wish there were no stds!!!!!!!

i just want to say how awesome this girl is - for not only freaking out over not using a condom but for wanting to get tested for std's afterward. too many people act like this situation is no big deal and that nothing bad will happen to them. everybody makes mistakes - but making sure that a mistake doesn't affect others is true responsibility.

Don't forget to test for HSV-2 as well. This is a blood test that will detect anti-bodies (or not). Don't take a chance or assume you don't have it - often times there are minimal sypmtoms that are easily mistaken for other infections or even razor burn or yeast infection.

Wow, the same thing happened to me as well. Only, I wasn't concerned about STDs, just getting pregnant.

3 months before HIV can be detected - so if partner just infected (yet can spread) will not know for 3 months (could be 6 months with some people, some people won't show up in test for 1 year, and very rare is the situation where testing detects nothing but person still infected and spreading HIV).

Condom failure rate with couples trained on proper condom use is 15 percent in one study. Another study had one gay man infected, the other in the relationship not infected, 15 percent transmitted to partner. So even with condom sex and infection is like Russian Roulette (used with a 6 shooter where one bullet in chamber, revolver spun and 1 in 6 chance of death). Same odds with condoms. Higher odds without condoms.

Long term dedicated relationships with 1 person is only solution to risk (where each is faithful and the relationship starts after 6 months of no sex, each is tested... relationship then is most likely safe.
